DOI:
https://doi.org/10.52585/icvs.v7i1.27Abstract
Communication aids in nursing homes. An ethnographic study of communication and human rights in the practice of eldercare
This ethnographic study examines how opportunities for rights-based communication for residents using communication aids are shaped in everyday nursing home practice, and how this affects participation and self-determination. The study is based on observations conducted in somatic units in two Swedish nursing homes, as well as interviews with ten staff members.
The findings show that communicative opportunities are not determined solely by access to communication aids, but are also shaped by organisational practices, routines, work processes and interactions between staff and residents. This, in turn, influences how participation can be realised in everyday practice.
The study highlights the need to develop organisational conditions and work practices that frame communication as a human rights issue rather than an individual ability, in order to support participation and self-determination among older adults.
