Why the experience of moving to a nursing home differs. The role of timing and relationships
More than 80 000 older people currently live in nursing homes in Sweden. Previous research has shown that relocation can be stressful and, in some cases, associated with premature death, yet experiences vary considerably between individuals.
The aim of this article is to deepen the understanding of why relocation to residential care is experienced so differently by older people. The study employs a unique longitudinal design in which we followed seven individuals (aged 87–95) over several months through a total of 21 interviews conducted at different stages of the relocation process. The findings are presented through three illustrative cases that highlight distinct experiences and three analytically differentiated processes: disrupted transition, turbulent transition, and transition with adjusted expectations.
The study demonstrates how variations in relocation experiences are shaped through the interplay of social relationships and timing. To uphold the core values of dignity and well-being in elder care, relocation should therefore be planned with greater attention to both timing and the older person’s social context.
