Multi-ethnic eldercare – from the perspective of Swedish home care users
This article explores the experiences of older Swedish home care users regarding staff perceived as ”foreign” and is based on interviews with 34 older care users. The prevalence of staff members with migrant background is significant in Swedish eldercare. The study shows that while negative experiences connected to poor language knowledge exist, users often appreciate foreign-born care workers. Their esteem is linked both to an overall sympathy for care staff regardless of their origin, and to specific traits connected to place of birth, such as opportunities to create personal bonds by engaging in stories related to staff members’ background. Interviewees frequently used disclaimers to emphasize that their critical comments should not be interpreted as intolerance or racism.
