Abstract

Siblings and parents of the very oldest people live longer – a study of the oldest people in Sweden and their families

The people who live the longest are often seen as a select group who have the right environment and genetic predisposition to live long. Previous research has shown that relatives of the very oldest live longer than the rest of the population. However, no such research has been done in a Swedish context. As there is a need to validate the ages of people who live beyond 108 years, this population of Swedish people was selected, along with their parents and siblings to see if the parents and siblings of 108-year-olds live longer than the rest of the Swedish population. Age validation was carried out in the form of a search in Swedish population registration archives, and family reconstruction. The data obtained were then analyzed in comparison with data from the Swedish population. The results showed that between 1853 and 1915, 160 people over 108 years of age lived in Sweden, 90 percent of whom were women. Their parents and siblings both lived on average more than five years longer than the rest of the Swedish population born during the same period, and there was a higher proportion of siblings and parents who lived to be over 90 than in the rest of the population. The results confirm previous research and show that parents and siblings of the oldest people in Sweden live longer.
